Last month when Apple announced the 2018 iPad Pro, one thing became clear — its lead in mobile chipsets is so big over traditional ARM competitors and Intel on the x86 side of things, that now the iPad has become a true rival to the MacBook from a computational point of view. This advantage, when seen from the lens of the iPad Pro, it becomes clear that the potential is there for it to become the ultimate portable computer which could also double as a gaming machine. For sure, many people would think that they could ditch their laptops altogether and upgrade to an iPad pro; after all it represents Apple’s vision for the future of computing. We have been testing the new iPad Pro for the last five days and in this piece we will answer this question. It will depend from person to person based on use case, so the answer is more nuanced than a flat yes or no.

“I just like to watch movies on the go”
For some types of permissions, you can tweak settings beyond just choosing whether a permission is allowed or denied. For example, if you tap Location Services, you can select whether apps get access to your location always, never, or just while you’re using the app. You can choose which apps have the ability to use cellular data. Trade‑in values may vary based on the condition and model of your iPad trade‑in. Must be at least 18. Offer may not be available in all stores and not all devices are eligible for credit. Apple reserves the right to refuse or limit the quantity of any device for any reason.
If this is the mainstream use, you will find the iPad pro to be a better bet than the MacBook Air or any other MacBook for that matter as it has been specifically designed for these types of tasks. If you like to watch movies on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, then the iPad Pro not only provides a gorgeous screen, but it has kickass speakers — more so, the apps on iOS also allow you to download shows and movies locally, which is something you can’t do on the Mac. Generally too, if you’re looking at the 12.9-inch model, you will find the screen to be wonderful for video consumption and the speakers to be as loud as the ones on the MacBook pro.
“I will be using it to get basic work done using Microsoft Office”
Microsoft makes a robust Office suite of apps for the iPad Pro. These apps can be accessed using an Office 365 subscription. For most people, these apps will be more than good enough — though in reality they aren’t as feature rich as Office apps on Windows or the macOS. You get Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook for email and calendar. Other than Microsoft’s apps, Google has all its apps as native experiences on the iPad Pro and they work on the same level as the web apps which you’d ideally use within a web browser. Similarly, Apple also has its iWork apps — Pages, Numbers and Keynote which are already preloaded. As far as email is concerned, Microsoft’s Outlook is a great free alternative to Apple’s email app which I’ve found to be slow. Gmail is great if you’re a Gmail user and there is also a paid option in Spark which works great across Outlook and Gmail-based workflows.
- See it on a map. Open the Find My app. Choose the Devices tab. Select the device to see its location.
- Baseball Radar is the essential radar gun app. Best of all, it is a free app. The app will feature ads in future releases and currently has a placeholder spot.
- I'm going to be getting a new Ipad Air soon (my 1st Apple product), and I'm not sure if all Iphone Apps can be installed on Ipad? Actions Today 8:54 pm.
“How good is the web browser?”
For most people, the web browser on the iPad Pro is going to be more than good enough. That being said, if you’re looking to use it for complicated flash-based web apps, then the iPad Pro will be a dead-end. For example, the PCMag India content management system is a web-based workflow and the iPad Pro aces things, but my previous employer India Today had a rather arcane CMS system and the iPad Pro couldn’t be used for it. Even today, that kind of a flash-based CMS would be incompatible on the new iPad because of the way the web browser and iOS have been designed. Videos generally are parsed to their companion iOS apps — YouTube and Vimeo being good examples.
“Is it good for gaming?”
This is a nuanced question. It actually depends on what type of gamer you are. If you’re a serious PC or console gamer, then the iPad Pro is going to feel underwhelming, though, at the same time, you’re going to struggle to find gaming hardware that’s tuned to your needs at the price of the iPad. If you’re a causal gamer, who likes to kill time with PUBG and Fortnite or hell, is even serious about these games, then the iPad Pro becomes very interesting. It has crushing graphics that will match the Xbox One S which means there is some incredible graphical potential in the Apple A12x BIONIC chip. Games on iOS are some of the best and are increasingly matching console-quality immersion. The iPad Pro takes things to another level with games like Assasins Creed and NBA 2k2 running console-level engines on the iPad Pro and it doesn’t even break a sweat while running these games. Go figure! Make no mistake, this is a mean gaming machine, just leave some unreasonable PlayStation 4 class expectations behind in the closet!
“What about pro apps like Photoshop, FCP and Abelton Live?”

Apple Macbook Vs Ipad Pro
Traditionally, the iPad has been home to companion apps which work in tandem with the Mac. These have generally been scaled up iPhone apps. Now, that’s starting to change. For instance, Apple has worked closely with Adobe for the development of an iPad-specific version of Photoshop running the full engine of the app, tuned for a touch interface and Apple Pencil. Last year, Enlighten was launched and the performance was claimed to be at par with a Mac runnning a core i7 processor. But so far, Apple has only made limited headway. Sure, there is a functional version of iMovie and Adobe Premier Rush for video editors, but these apps aren’t at par with a full-fledged Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premier Pro. Audio editing software for pc. For musicians, there is Garage Band, but again Apple hasn’t developed an iPad version of Logic nor has Abelton developed versions of its award-winning live digital audio workstation. For pro, the iPad is still a little hobbled because there are no pro versions of apps that are still available on the Macintosh or Windows for that matter. That being said, considering the amount of firepower housed by the new iPad Pro, Apple is making headway with pro app developer support.
“Can you live without a file system?”
Yes, last year Apple added the files app which acts like a universal hub for all your cloud drives, but it isn’t a file manager nor a native file system on iOS. This makes the iPad Pro a problematic device to use as a mainstream computer. Those who are used to dragging and dropping will have issues. Even though the iPad Pro supports USB Type C, there is no native USB support and is more dependent on the app developer to add it. Right now a handful of accessories can handle it like cameras and USB Ethernet dongles. The fact that there is no native USB support through the files app and there is no native file system to handle different kinds of files, hobbles the iPad as a full-fledged computer. However, if you use mostly the cloud for file storage and have apps for the files you’re going to be using, you can make the iPad Pro your day-to-day computer.
At the end of the day, it depends what kind of a user you are. Yes, many people will say that the iPad cannot replace a PC, however, the iPad has been around for a while, since 2010, and in the last eight years, it has regularly outpaced PC sales. This means that there is a generation of users for whom the iPad is what a PC experience is — for them this is the pinnacle. All you have to decide is what you want to do with the machine because clearly, it is not the jack of all trades yet.

The bottom of your post states you have an iPad 2. If that is correct, it will not update beyond iOS 9.3.5 and that is also true of the 3rd generation iPad. The 4th generation iPad will not update beyond iOS 10.3.3
